As winter's chill approaches in Zone 3b, it's time to tuck in our beloved garlic for a long and cozy nap. Here at The Little Garlic Farm, we're sharing our time-tested method of insulating our garlic beds with a warm blanket of straw. When it comes to protecting your garlic investment and ensuring a bountiful harvest next year, a little straw can go a long way. In this blog post, we'll walk you through the process step by step, accompanied by some snapshots of our own garlic beds.



There are no secrets to successfully winterizing your garlic crop and bidding farewell to our little green shoots until spring's awakening. the essential winter garlic ritual involves lots of straw.  This year I got a big square bale of straw from my neighbors 2023 crop.

With the garlic planted and it is getting late fall, spread about 4 inches of straw mulch on your garlic.  The snow came quickly after I mulched the garlic. Sleep tight!
